I was all hep to try using a makeup base as soon as I learned such a thing even existed. I thought Sephora would be a good start, a baby step before I made a commitment to the idea & bought something more expensive.

Right out of the tube, I was unhappy. I do not see this pinkish opalescent color other have described. It's just white to me. It doesn;t look like something you want to put on your skin. It actually seems like it would be *bad* for your complexion.

Well, I went ahead and applied it as directed, and my face was immediately greasy. Then my foundation felt like it was slipping off, the very opposite of the intended result.

The final straw was the smell. This stuff has a weird, unpleasant, hard to describe odor that stays on your face all day. And of course the scent is stronger since it's ON my nose!

Oh, and it left my (very precious) makeup sponge greasy, too. It wasn't salvageable even after a wash. (I use special stage makeup sponges that give an airbrush finish and great control over how much makeup goes on your face.)(Can't live without them!)

Now Sephora has at relaunched their Sephora brand in an attempt to compete with the designer lines. I don't even want to try their new base.

Tried Smashbox's base and wasn't a fan of that either, but didn't hate it as much as Sephora's.

Instead of using a base I started using a mattifying moisturizer under my foundation, and it worked just fine. I've shopped on Amazon for years and have never once written a review, but I saw another review for this product saying it wasn't good for those with sensitive skin and I just had to speak up. I swear by this stuff. I am a redhead who suffers from extremely sensitive skin as well as rosacea; I can't use anything with fragrance and half the stuff that says it's great for sensitive skin still makes my face dry, red and flaky. I need something that lightly covers my blotchy skin, but I hate to look like I'm wearing full face foundation. Hence the almost in Almost Makeup. It's so light but gives such nice coverage, it's perfect. I never leave the house without this stuff on, and I'm as low maintenance as it gets, so that's saying something. I had been searching high and low for a tinted moisturizer or liquid foundation that meets my long list of specifications. I wanted something oil-free, with non-chemical sunscreen that wasn't greasy, had natural ingredients, wouldn't make my giant pores look even bigger, and (this is the hardest part) the shade has to be a match! I'm a woman of color of mixed heritage, and it is VERY tough to find a foundation that matches my light-ish brown skin with olive/almost yellow undertones. (I'm about Halle Berry's color). Most foundations - even if they come in darker shades - have a beige or pink undertones that make me look like a manequin or like someone smeared mud on my face. Not so with Tarte - there were actually 3 shades that were close to my skin!

I came across Smooth Operator whilst looking for reviews of Tarte's mascaras, otherwise I would've never thought to look at this brand for foundation. The description of this product was exactly what I'd been looking for. It's super lightweight, feels like I don't have anything on, and gives a nice matte-but-not-dry-looking finish. The formula is the perfect creamy consistency - just thick enough that it won't sink into my gigantic pores - and it comes in a tube that is easy to throw in your purse in case you have to do the ol' "smear on a little makeup on at a red light on your way to work" bit. A little goes a long way too; a squirt slightly larger than a an eraser on the end of pencil is plenty.

I want to emphasize that this is for LIGHT coverage, so if you're the kind of person who does up your face every day like you're about to host Dancing With the Stars, this stuff ain't for you. For more coverage (or special occasions), you can simply layer this with the pressed or loose powder of your choice.

To give you a point of reference, I'm 29 yrs. old, with combination-to-oily skin, and I don't have acne/breakouts or wrinkles. I just need a product to even out my terribly dull and uneven skin tone, cover up some redness, make me look "polished" and give me sun proctection without the ashy, washed-out look that most natural sunblocks leave on colored skin.
